Building Safe, Inclusive Spaces Matters Now More Than Ever

GSA

This June, we’re joining communities and allies across our nation in observing LGBTQ+ Pride Month. We’re using this moment to reflect on the enduring, diverse, and unique history of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. As educators, we have an obligation to support the next generation of leaders in making a more just and equitable society.

It was only 51 years ago that the first Pride celebration took place in commemoration of the Stonewall Uprising, a protest led by transwomen of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who fought against injustice and discrimination directed toward the LGBTQ+ community.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is more important than ever. Moments like these are prime vantage points to see how far our nation has come-and how much further it needs to go to ensure fair and equal treatment for all.

At Green Dot, we put community first. Our school leaders and educators work diligently to create welcoming, safe, and rigorous learning environments where all students can be their authentic selves. Through the assistance of counselors, clinical supervisors, and school psychologists, we’ve created many pathways to support our students’ mental health and well-being. And our schools have developed and refined practices, policies, and structures needed to create safe and productive learning environments.

Here are 4 stories on how our learning communities have built fair, strong, and inclusive spaces on our campuses for all students.

In order to deliver on our promise of preparing all students for college, leadership and life, we believe we need to foster school cultures that embrace both individuality and unity, beginning with our own team members. That’s why we launched our  Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative.
