Statement from Green Dot on the Supreme Court DACA Case

DACA

Last week, we saw once again a demonstration of the spirit of hope and promise that underlies America – and makes our country great. Thousands of people across the nation joined with hundreds who gathered outside the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects undocumented young people who immigrated to the United States as children from deportation. This show of support was an emphatic reminder that the nearly 700,000 DACA recipients, or DREAMers, are essential and irreplaceable members of our communities. They are our neighbors, our friends, our families, and our future. This is especially true in Los Angeles, which is home to the most DREAMers in the country and 11,500 Green Dot students.

While it is unclear how the Supreme Court will rule on the future of the program, Green Dot Public Schools will never waver in our commitment to DREAMers and their families. We have educated and graduated many DREAMers over the past five years, and we continue to do so today as part of our pledge to provide the highest quality education to every student. As we have stated before, and as our leadership has committed us to do, we will continue to support the families of DREAMers along with the families of all our students. We believe deeply in ensuring equity for our students and providing each of them with a safe learning environment.

We join with our partners in education – at traditional schools, charter public schools, religious schools and private schools – in hoping that the Supreme Court will rule to maintain DACA, providing 700,000 young people with the hope of a bright future built on the foundation of their education. Until that ruling comes sometime in the first half of 2020, Green Dot Public Schools will continue our work to nurture the strength and resiliency of our students and their families. And regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision, we always will stand with them.
