Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy Opens New Gymnasium and CTE Room
Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy is undergoing a wave of exciting upgrades to vitalize its academic and athletic programs. This spring, Locke opened its renovated gymnasium, a $1.1 million project, as well as its new Career Technical Education (CTE) room.
$1.1 Million Gymnasium Renovation
The Locke Saints band played triumphantly as students, alumni, and guests gathered on April 27, 2023 at the school to celebrate the grand reopening of the school’s gymnasium. The crowd beamed with excitement as the first basket was made by a Unified Sports athlete, signifying the start of a new era of Saints athletics. The freshly installed floors, which were done by the Pacific Flooring Company, the same contractor for the University of California Los Angeles, were put to the test with a performance by the Locke cheer team and a competitive two-versus-two basketball game.
Director of Facilities for Green Dot California, Nathan Humphreys understands the difference a revitalized space can make. “The recent remodel of the Locke gymnasium has had a transformative impact on the school community. Locke scholars are now able to engage in physical activities with renewed enthusiasm and a greater sense of pride in their school. The new gymnasium is not just a space for exercise, but a symbol of the school’s commitment to providing the best possible educational experience for its scholars,” he said.
Career Technical Education at Locke
In Locke’s new CTE room, students have had the opportunity to build and test robots, enjoy an after-school gaming club, and learn the skills of woodworking all in state-of-the-art facilities right on campus. Giving scholars the space and means to explore and discover their passions teaches them that anything is achievable.
Locke High School received $916K for 2.5 years from the Strong Workforce program and is matching $1.8M over that timespan. The grant funding additionally provides career mentoring and skill training to low-income, Latinx, and Black students while creating access to programs for students interested in a pathway to college.
In our ongoing commitment to enhance our facilities, Green Dot Public Schools California is consistently seeking to promote an environment of collaboration that ensures excellence for all of our students in every aspect of their education.
