Green Dot launches students to college with annual scholarship
Green Dot Public Schools held its 4th annual Race to College 5K Fun(d) Run on February 8, 2020.
On a sunny springtime afternoon, students across Green Dot Public Schools attended a virtual Launch to College event, where they joined breakout sessions with admission counselors and networked with Green Dot students attending the same universities. However, for two seniors, this event would add an extra dose of excitement.
Ánimo Leadership Charter High School senior Hazel Davis said her phone kept buzzing halfway through the event.
“My friends texted me, saying ‘congratulations,’” Davis said, as recipients were announced for the 4th annual Race to College 5K Fun(d) Run Scholarship “I ran to my mom and my grandma, because I was so happy.” In the fall of 2020, she will attend University of California, Davis.
Brandon Rodriguez, a senior at Ánimo Watts College Preparatory Academy, who plans on attending California State University Long Beach, said he was “shocked and excited,” when he learned that he won the scholarship. “Achieving this scholarship motivated me to put more effort into accomplishing my goals,” Rodriguez said.
Earlier this year, Green Dot awarded the $2,000 annual Race to College 5K Fun(d) Run scholarships to two students who demonstrated a need for financial assistance to make their college dreams real. This annual scholarship is made possible by Asociación de Maestros Unidos, the teachers union representing our teachers and counselors and Green Dot Public Schools.
