Green Dot Teachers Union and Staff Host Second Scholarship Fundraiser
On a rainy Saturday morning, over 200 educators, administrators, union leaders, and community leaders laced up their running shoes to participate in the annual Race to College 5K Fun(d) Run. At Green Dot Public Schools, we know students win when everyone collaborates.
That’s why the teachers union representing our teachers in California, Asociación de Maestros Unidos (AMU), and Green Dot created the Race to College 5K Fun(d) Run. The run brings the Green Dot family together for a day of fun and exercise, while creating a scholarship opportunity for our college-bound seniors.
Participants paid a small fee to compete at the second annual 5K run at Southwest College in Los Angeles, which seeds a scholarship fund.
“Anytime we can help any of the students in our communities succeed is a huge win, especially when it comes to helping them afford college.”
–Gabriel Boriant-Guertler,
Spanish teacher at Ánimo Leadership Charter High School in Lennox
Despite the rain, participants raced through the course to support the scholarship fund.
“As an educator, my daily goal is moving students closer to college, so this is just another step in helping all students make their post high school aspirations a reality,”
–Rachel Vira,
biology teacher at Ánimo Inglewood Charter High School in Inglewood
The scholarship recipient will be announced at Green Dot’s senior transition event, Launch to College.
”This collaboration serves as a reminder that we are all part of a great organization that does great work. And whether someone is an administrator, a teacher, or a union leader we are all fully committed to the success of our students.”
–Angel Maldonado, AMU President
