Celebrating 25 years of Green Dot Public Schools

Join us as we continue to transform public education

Legacy In Motion

Green Dot Public Schools’ 25th Anniversary celebration lit up BMO Stadium with an unforgettable night of joy, pride, and community. Together, we honored 25 years of impact and looked ahead to the next chapter of transforming public education across Los Angeles.

The evening marked a night full of dazzling Green Dot student performances, from our Ánimo Leadership High School Folklórico dancers and Ánimo James B. Taylor Middle School Cheer Team, to powerful Ánimo Voice poetry readings, signature beats from our alumni DJs, and the inspiring presence of our student speakers, who accepted awards on behalf of our three remarkable sets of honorees. And we capped the night with sugary delights and a memorable guest DJ set by the legendary DJ Hapa.

Since 1999, Green Dot has reimagined what is possible in public education. This milestone event brought together our supporters, partners, and champions whose generosity has fueled Green Dot’s mission from the start. Now as we look forward, we invite you to help shape our next chapter.

Meet the Ettingers

How do you hope your support with Animo Voices has helped shape Green Dot’s legacy?

Animo Voices encourages Greet Dot students to express themselves in creative writing, visual arts or spoken word presentations.  It is a competition where the winners receive scholarships for college and computers/iPads to reward their achievements, and see their works printed in a full-color volume that elevates the visibility of their creations. Although it is a competitive process, students are coached and supported closely by their teachers, who help them develop their voices and messages. Animo Voices lifts up students who have talents not often showcased in normal school work, and celebrates the bold ideas and thoughts of teenagers who can feel minimized or ignored by society. Green Dot’s legacy, passionately supporting its students becoming capable learners and thinkers, shines brightly through the Animo Voices program, and we are proud to be its sponsors and fans.

Can you share a moment or memory that captures what Animo Voices means to you?

The self-confidence that radiates from the presenting finalists on awards night is amazing.  When the students proudly present their works on stage, to an audience of their peers, families, teachers and guests, they seem to transcend all the forces in society that tell them they can’t achieve their dreams.

Why do you believe visual arts and literacy are essential for students?

We enthusiastically believe in the value of Animo Voices, as it gives middle and high school students a unique opportunity to express their perspectives, feelings and ideas about their world. A typical standardized curriculum has little room for creative expression; in a larger context, the value of independent thinking is questioned or threatened in the current environment.

How do you hope your support, through the Opportunity Fund, has helped shape Green Dot’s legacy?

Green Dot does such an excellent job with middle and high school education for their students. You also understand your students need help to build on that foundation to complete their journey through college, another critical step to help them succeed. It’s quite challenging for any young person to get through college successfully, even coming from a family with financial means and experience with higher education. With the many additional hurdles that Green Dot’s students navigate, it’s much more difficult. It’s our hope that the Opportunity Fund will remove obstacles that prevent them from attending the best possible college to fulfill their dreams. We hope it allows as many students as possible to complete their college degrees at schools that will provide the best educational experience possible. Supporting this student success helps fulfill Green Dot’s mission that ALL its scholars are prepared for, and succeed in, college, leadership and life!

What does college persistence mean to you?

Strictly speaking, college persistence is the measure of a school’s rate of graduation, as well as the time it takes for students to complete their degrees. In terms of Green Dot’s students, however, college persistence means much more:

– How well a college or university supports their students. This can differ greatly from school to school.

– How often students have the opportunity to live on campus, so they can focus on their college experience.

– Are students able to have basic supplies, e.g. computers and the textbooks they need.

– Are students able to have appropriate clothing for their college’s climate, for example, winter coats.

– Can travel costs be covered, so students have the option to attend a school farther from home.

The Opportunity Fund was designed to help eliminate these limitations, broadening the range of schools that students can choose to attend.

What values or beliefs guide your commitment to education equity?

Our goal should be that everybody has access to a healthy, stable and fulfilling life. Education opens the door to many choices, but the cost of higher education can be prohibitive. We believe that helping students have better access to a great education, regardless of their financial means, is crucial to supporting lifelong equity for individuals and communities. It’s a win for everyone. Social and economic mobility makes our world more culturally enriched, healthier and resilient!

Meet the Taylors

Finish this sentence: “Education has the power to…”

…sustain the health and well-being of our democratic system of governance by giving people a stake in the health of that system’s success.  By greatly expanding the skill set and knowledge that individuals have, education literally dramatically increases the odds that a family’s socio-economic trajectory will be improved.  Education is the best way possible to address wealth disparities in the long-run.

What inspired your involvement with Green Dot?

Seeing a K-12 organization that made the learning and academic success of students their number one priority.  And Green Dot’s willingness to go into the lowest performing communities, in terms of educational achievement, and take on the challenge of making improvements in the face of long-standing failures on the part of traditional public K-12 systems.

In your view, what makes Green Dot’s approach to education distinct?

Setting high standards for students and  teachers/staff, and constantly striving to achieve those goals.

🚨 We are pleased to announce that all Green Dot campuses have reopened. Our teams have worked hard to ensure a safe and clean environment for your children. Masks will be available  for students and staff who need them, but we ask that you send your student to school with a mask if you have masks at home.
