5 Green Dot Students Take Part in Prestigious Summer Youth Fellows Program

At Green Dot, we encourage and prepare our students to participate in summer opportunities to help them explore new interests, prepare for college, and develop key life skills. This summer, five Green Dot students took part in the Coro Southern California Youth Fellows Program, a six-week internship designed to help students hone their leadership, communication, and analytical skills. 

Overall, twenty-five students across Southern California participated in this year’s Youth Fellow Program. Our five Green Dot student participants were April Lucero, a junior from Ánimo Watts College Preparatory Academy; Kevin Bermudez, a senior from Ánimo Ralph Bunche Charter High School; Andrea Avila, a senior from Ánimo Leadership Charter High School; Senior Emily Chamale from Ánimo Pat Brown Charter High School; and Alondra Santos, a senior from Ánimo Inglewood Charter High School. 

During the fellowship, students undergo three weeks of leadership building seminar training, a two-week internship placement, and a one week group project where participating students can apply their newly acquired skills. 

Monette Borigsay, the senior manager of development and communications at Coro, recalled a great experience engaging with our students. “It was a pleasure to work with Green Dot students in the Coro Youth Fellows Program,” she said. “The Youth Fellows were inquisitive, committed, and willing to stretch their comfort zones in order to grow as leaders. They walked away with a deeper understanding of Los Angeles, an expanded network of peers and professionals supporting their journey, and Coro’s leadership toolkit to leverage along the way.” 

Opportunities like the Youth Fellows Program to help expand our students’ access to opportunities and help remove barriers to their success. We are immensely proud of the accomplishments and opportunities that our Green Dot students enjoyed. We look forward to helping them prepare for success in college, leadership, and life through expansive in-class programs, rigorous academic coursework, and accessible college-ready resources.
