community

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, United Parents and Students, in conjunction with Green Dot Public Schools and other partners, will welcome parents, stakeholders, local leaders and elected officials, and community members to the ForwardLA: A Day for Justice event at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. The assembly and subsequent breakout sessions aim to provide a space for community members to address issues in Los Angeles that affect quality of life for children and families. Participants will engage in collaborative and educational discussions and form action plans around six issue areas: affordable housing, food deserts, clean communities and breathable air, good jobs, immigration protections, and safe streets.

Speakers and panelists include prominent political figures and local leaders, such as:

  • California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De Leon
  • California Assemblymember Mike Gipson (64th CA Assembly District)
  • Los Angeles City Councilmember Curren Price
  • Los Angeles City Councilmember Jose Huizar
  • Los Angeles Unified School Board President Monica Garcia
  • Los Angeles Unified School Board Vice President Nick Melvoin
  • Deputy City Attorney Sanders Gordon
  • Angelica Salas, Executive Director of CHIRLA
  • Sandy Song, Vulnerable Populations Specialist, Special Projects Unit, Department of Public Health
  • Representatives from the City of LA Housing + Community Investment Department (HCIDLA)
  • Representatives from Communities for a Better Environment
  • Representatives from the East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice
  • Breanna Morrison, Policy Director of the LA Food Policy Council
  • Lisa Salazar, Director of Workforce Development & Economic Opportunity at Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti
  • Elder Mike Cummings, Executive Director of We Care Outreach

This will be the fourth year Green Dot, UPAS, and various community partners work together to assemble parents to advocate for the needs of their community, each year building on the one before to provide a powerful platform for parent and student voices. This summit is a vital step UPAS will take towards advocating for families and communities to take action so that each child—Green Dot or not—has the opportunities necessary for success inside and outside of the classroom.
