LAUSD’s new Superintendent, Tennessee’s Achievement School District, and Critical Race Theory.

• Today, LAUSD’s Board of Education unanimously approved Alberto Carvalho to be the district’s new superintendent. Carvalho has served as Miami-Dade’s Superintendent – the nation’s fourth largest school district – since 2008. He has a history of supporting school choice.   • Meanwhile, LAUSD appears to be “backing away” from a student vaccination mandate. (KTLA, LA Times, LA Downtown News)

• Four schools in Tennessee’s Achievement School District will return to Shelby County Schools at the end of this year. Per ASD policy, schools can only be in the ASD for 10 years, and two of the four schools were in their 10th year. . (TN Department of Education, ABC 24, Fox 13) 

• Critical race theory remains in the national spotlight. (Axios, EdWeek, National Review) In New Hampshire, a teachers’ union is suing the state regarding an anti-CRT bill (Washington Post, Fox News). In Texas, an anti-CRT law has already been passed, and school libraries are scrambling to respond. (NY Times) Nationwide, public electeds continue to contend with their stance on this inflammatory topic. (EdWeek)
