Green Dot California released the below statement regarding Derek Chauvin's trial today:
One of the largest human and civil rights movements in our lifetime spilled onto the streets almost a year ago in response to the murder of George Floyd. It is our hope that the jury’s verdict in the Derek Chauvin case provides George Floyd’s family with some semblance of peace and paves the way for greater accountability at all levels of law enforcement.
While many celebrate today’s verdict, it is important to remember that at the center of it all is a family in mourning, the Floyd family, who in their own words said that today’s verdict represents “painfully earned justice.” It is also a reminder that systemic racism remains, as President Biden said today, “a stain on our nation’s soul.” George Floyd’s life is one of many that have been lost over the past year to police brutality. The fight for justice is far from over. Our organization remains unwavering in our commitment to equity and anti-racism, and we stand ready to do our part to create a more just world for the scholars and families we serve.
