The competition is an opportunity to motivate, recognize, and celebrate our strong student voices through writing, spoken word, and art.<\/i><\/p>\n\t

I’m Tired of Being the Tail<\/h2>\n\tYou ask me how I identify,
\nMy identity
\nYou want to test me and be surprised when you get the best of me
\nI’m tired of being the tail
\nI’ma get to the top,
\nI may have to fail
\nAnd when I’m done with the worst They waiting like “Well”
\nThey won’t look at me different
\nThey’ll look at me the same
\nI’ve learned to live with it and say
\nIt’s “okay”
\nYou say I’m black
\nI’m not a chocolate bar
\nI’m not for your consumption
\nBut I will admit I am scrumdiddlyumptious Wham Bam Yes Ma’am
\nI’m Deuteronomy 28
\nI’m destined and I’ve got faith
\nI’m so sick of being the tail
\nI’ma send you the message in the mail so you can finally get the picture
\nI’m tired of being ashamed
\nI’m me, wild, and cannot be tamed
\nSorry this is me I was born this way
\nI’m outspoken
\nMy voice cannot be broken
\nI’ve got too much to say
\nAnd you’ll never stop me in any way
\nAs I wander aimlessly with my head down Pondering why no one was ever proud I vowed and
\npromised to myself
\nI am something to be proud of
\nI got a weight on my shoulders
\nFamily selling boulders
\n‘Cause that’s what they gave us
\nIt’s in our melanin
\nWe built America so you can call this a nation? A land of the free where you can just be But is that true?
\nYou all came from us
\nSo why am I the color
\nWord to my mother
\nWe all slip further
\nBANG!
\nInto dysfunction
\nAnd division\n

\nThey’ve won!
\nYou want to say
\n“Black power we devour”
\nBut we killing each other we’re cowards There’s no black power
\nYou’ve got sons without fathers You’ve got daughters without mothers The sons
\nbecome murders
\nThe daughters become worriers
\nThis is Not a union
\nWe’ve got to stick together
\nAnd stop being the tail
