Although each Green Dot school may modify school colors as needed for school safety, students must adhere to the requirements below at all times.<\/p><p>A student has the right to dress in a manner consistent with the student\u2019s gender identity, subject to any dress code adopted on a school site.<\/p><p><strong>Belts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>If a belt is worn, only tan, brown, or black, a standard width, and properly worn at waist level.\u00a0 Belts may be webbed, braided or leather.\u00a0 Belts and belt buckles must not have logos, studs, chains, writings, or initials.<\/p><p><strong>Footwear.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Only closed-toes dress shoes or tennis shoes. \u00a0No slippers or sandals.<\/p><p><strong>Headwear.<\/strong>\u00a0 No hats, bandanas, sweatbands, or visors are allowed.\u00a0 Students may wear ribbons, rubber bands, barrettes, or headbands.<\/p><p><strong>Jackets\/Coats\/Sweatshirts.<\/strong>\u00a0 Must be all black without writing, initials, emblems, or logos of any kind except the school name.\u00a0 Logos bearing the school name are available for free for all students upon request in the school office.\u00a0 Students may not wear hoods in class.<\/p><p><strong>Pants\/Shorts.\u00a0<\/strong>Only trouser-style khaki or black pants\/shorts and unripped black jeans . Sweatpants are not allowed. Trousers or unripped black jeans must be at least ankle length but not touching the ground. It is not permissible to cut the leg seam. Shorts must reach the top of the knee in length. Pants\/shorts must be worn at waist level and not at the hip.<\/p><p><strong>Shirts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Only collared shirts, preferably polo-style are to be worn.\u00a0 The only approved logo or name is the school name.\u00a0 Logos bearing the school name are available for free for all students upon request in the school office.\u00a0 Shirts must be tucked in at all times during school hours.\u00a0 When both hands are raised, the shirt must be long enough to remain tucked.\u00a0 All undershirts must be white, grey, or black, and must be worn under the shirt.<\/p><p><strong>Skirts\/Skorts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Skirts\/skorts must be khaki style, an appropriately fitted size, and fall just above the student\u2019s kneecaps.<\/p><p><strong>Tights\/Leggings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Only solid white or beige may be worn under skirts of the appropriate length.<\/p><p><strong>Sweaters.<\/strong>\u00a0 Only V-neck pullover, crew-neck pullover, or cardigan in solid black.\u00a0 All sweaters must be worn over a uniform shirt.<\/p><p><u>Uniform Violation<\/u><\/p><p>Violations of the above Uniform Requirements must not result in suspension. \u00a0Green Dot recommends that its schools follow these steps as needed:<\/p><p>1.Meet with the student to understand the challenges and provide a loaner uniform, if available;<\/p><p>2.Communicate with parents; then<\/p><p>3.Follow up with student for additional support as needed and provide a restorative intervention<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1225\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Mathematics Placement Policy<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1225\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1225\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><h3>Policy:\u00a0 Mathematics Placement Policy<\/h3><p>This policy has been adopted to establish a fair, objective, and transparent protocol for placement in mathematics courses for students entering 9th grade, in order to ensure the success of every student and to meet the Legislative intent of the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015.<\/p><ol><li>In determining the mathematics course placement for entering 9th grade students, Green Dot systematically takes multiple objective academic measures of student performance into consideration, which may include any or all of the following as determined by Green Dot:<ul><li>i-Ready Diagnostic Adaptive Assessment aligned to the Common Core Math standards;<\/li><li>Statewide summative mathematics assessments through the CAASPP;<\/li><li>Placement tests that are aligned to state-adopted content standards in mathematics;<\/li><li>Recommendation, if available, of each student\u2019s 8th grade mathematics teacher based on classroom assignment and grades;<\/li><li>Recommendation, if any, of each student\u2019s 9th grade mathematics teacher based on classroom assignments and grades provided at the beginning of the school year;<\/li><li>Final grade in mathematics on the student\u2019s official, end of the year 8th grade report card; or<\/li><li>Results from all placement checkpoints, including at least one (1) placement checkpoint within the first month of the school year as described in Section 2, below.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Green Dot will provide at least one (1) placement checkpoint within the first month of the school year to ensure accurate placement and permit reevaluation of individual student progress. All mathematics teachers responsible for teaching 9th grade students will assess the mathematics placements for each 9th grade student assigned to the teacher\u2019s mathematics class. The teacher\u2019s assessment will take into consideration factors which may include, but are not limited to, updated i-Ready Adaptive Diagnostic scores, the student\u2019s classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, exams, and grades, and any comments provided by the student, the student\u2019s parent\/legal guardian, and\/or the student\u2019s other teachers regarding the student\u2019s mathematics placement. Based on the assessment, the teacher will then recommend that the student remain in the current mathematics placement or be transferred to another mathematics placement, in which case the teacher shall specify the mathematics course or level recommended for the student.<\/li><li>The Green Dot Director, or his or her designee, shall examine aggregate student placement data annually to ensure that students who are qualified to progress in mathematics courses based on their performance on objective academic measures included in Section 1 of this policy are not held back in a disproportionate manner on the basis of their race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic background. Green Dot shall annually report the aggregate results of this examination to the School Board.<\/li><li>Green Dot offers clear and timely recourse for each student and his or her parent or legal guardian who questions the student\u2019s placement, as follows:<ul><li>A parent\/legal guardian of any 9th grade student may submit a written request to the Green Dot Principal, or his or her designee, that:<ul><li>Requests information regarding how the student\u2019s mathematics placement was determined. Within five (5) days of receipt, the Green Dot Principal or designee shall respond in writing to the parent\/legal guardian\u2019s request by providing the information, including the objective academic measures that Green Dot relied upon in determining the student\u2019s mathematics placement.<\/li><li>Requests that the student retake the i-Ready Diagnostic and\/or an additional placement test, in which case the Principal or designee will attempt to facilitate the retest within two (2) weeks.<\/li><li>Requests reconsideration of the student\u2019s mathematics placement based on objective academic measures. Within five (5) school days of receipt, the Green Dot Principal or designee shall respond in writing to the parent\/legal guardian\u2019s request. The Principal or designee and the student\u2019s mathematics teacher must assess the objective academic measures provided by the parent in conjunction with the objective academic measures identified in Section 1 and 2 of this policy. Based on this assessment, the Principal or designee must determine whether the most appropriate mathematics placement for the student is the student\u2019s current placement or another placement, in which case the Principal shall specify the mathematics course or level recommended for the student. The Principal\u2019s or designee\u2019s response must provide the determination as well as the objective academic measures that the Principal or designee relied upon in making that determination.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Notwithstanding the foregoing, if the Principal or designee requires additional time to respond to a parent\/legal guardian\u2019s request, the Principal or designee will provide a written response indicating that additional time is needed. Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, using Green Dot Technology for unauthorized commercial purposes or monetary gain or for any activity prohibited by law or Green Dot policy (includes but is not limited to acts related to credit card fraud, electronic forgery, the use or sale of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and assisting others to perform illegal acts). Any violation that is determined to be prohibited by law may result in criminal prosecution.<\/li><li>Students are responsible for the proper use of their Green Dot Technology network or online services account at all times. Students shall use these services only under their assigned login or account and shall not share their account information.<\/li><li>Students may not use Green Dot Technology to plagiarize another\u2019s work, to place copyrighted material on the Green Dot computer systems without the author\u2019s permission, or in a manner that violates the terms of any software license agreement. Unless specified otherwise, students may download copyrighted material and software for their own educational purpose; however, such material shall not be distributed or duplicated without the copyright holder\u2019s written permission.<\/li><li>Unless otherwise noted, records, files, logs of any Internet Web Sites stored or visited, and communications accessed, stored, or transmitted using Green Dot Technology is not private or confidential. Green Dot may monitor and access any such user activity and data at any time, including to maintain system integrity and ensure acceptable use of technology.<\/li><li>Students shall not access other users\u2019 electronic communications, documents, or files without permission. Students shall not interfere with other users\u2019 ability to send or receive electronic communications, nor shall they attempt to read, delete, copy, modify, or forge other users\u2019 electronic communications, documents, or files.<\/li><li>Students should not intentionally interfere with the performance of Green Dot\u2019s network or intentionally damage any Green Dot Technology. Students shall not use hacking tools on the network, intentionally introduce malicious code or viruses into Green Dot\u2019s network, or create unauthorized wireless networks to access Green Dot\u2019s network. This includes establishing wireless access points, wireless routers, and open networks on personal devices.<\/li><li>Students shall not transmit material via any media, including email or internet pages, that is threatening, obscene, disruptive, or sexually explicit, or that could be construed as harassment or disparagement of others based on their race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion or political beliefs.<\/li><li>Students shall not engage in any form of bullying, including but not limited to, bullying committed by means of an electronic act using Green Dot Technology. This includes but is not limited to creating, posting, or transferring discriminatory, confidential, threatening, libelous, or slanderous comments through any electronic communication device in any form that intimidates, harasses, or is otherwise intended to harm, insult, or humiliate in a deliberate, repeated, or hostile and unwanted manner.<\/li><li>Students shall not vandalize Green Dot Technology in any form. Vandalism includes uploading, downloading, or creating computer viruses and\/or any intentional or malicious attempt to harm or destroy school equipment, electronic information services or the data of another user.<\/li><li>Students shall use appropriate language and decorum while using Green Dot Technology.<\/li><li>Green Dot will not be responsible for users\u2019 negligent or willful violations of Green Dot Technology policies, including but not limited to the unauthorized costs incurred by users due to such violations.<\/li><li>Students shall promptly report any security problem or misuse of Green Dot Technology to the teacher or principal.<\/li><li>Before a student is authorized to use Green Dot Technology, the student and their parent\/guardian shall sign and return the Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement in this Manual.<\/li><li>Before a student is authorized to check out and use a Green Dot-issued technological device for use at home, the student and their parent\/guardian shall sign and return the Technology Device Check-Out &amp; Home-Use Permission Form.<\/li><\/ul><p>Safety<\/p><ul><li>Green Dot shall ensure that all School computers with Internet access have a technology protection measure that blocks or filters Internet access to websites that have no educational purpose and\/or contain visual depictions that are obscene, constitute child pornography, or that are harmful to minors. While Green Dot is able to exercise reasonable control over content created and purchased by the School, it has limited control over content accessed via the internet and no filtering system is 100% effective. Neither Green Dot nor its staff shall be responsible for the failure of any technology protection measures, violations of copyright restrictions, or user mistakes or negligence.<\/li><li>To reinforce these measures, Green Dot implements rules and procedures designed to restrict students\u2019 access to harmful or inappropriate matter on the Internet and to ensure that students do not engage in unauthorized or unlawful online activities, including but not limited to the safety and security of students and student information when using email, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communication. Staff shall supervise students while they are using online services and may have teacher aides, student aides, and volunteers assist in this supervision, as appropriate.<\/li><li>Green Dot provides age-appropriate instruction regarding safe and appropriate behavior on social networking sites, chat rooms, and other Internet services. Such instruction shall include, but not be limited to, maintaining the student\u2019s online reputation and ensuring their personal safety by keeping their personal information private, the dangers of posting personal information online, misrepresentation by online predators, how to report inappropriate or offensive content or threats, behaviors that constitute cyberbullying, and how to respond when subjected to cyberbullying. Students are expected to follow safe practices when using school technology.<\/li><li>Student use of School computers to access social networking sites is not prohibited, but access is limited to educational purposes only. To the extent possible, Green Dot blocks or limits access to such sites on School computers with Internet access.<\/li><\/ul><p>Concerning Internet Usage<\/p><p>Reasonable precautions are established to prevent access to pornography, \u201chate groups,\u201d and other non- educational Internet sites. Such precautions include, but are not limited to, an Internet firewall system, which scans and limits access to Internet sites, a monitor scanning software allowing the instructor to view each student monitor from the instructor\u2019s monitor and instantly blank, lock, or deactivate the student\u2019s system. Any student intentionally attempting to or bypassing these precautions will be denied computer access. The discipline board or school officials will determine other administrative disciplinary actions. The student and their parents accept responsibility for the student\u2019s online actions. All other disciplinary policies of the School apply to the use of technological resources.<\/p><p>Concerning General Usage<\/p><p>The School will report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement authorities. Criminal activity includes, but is not limited to: defamation; obscenity; discrimination; violation of copyrights, trademark and\/or licenses; and\/or violation of other rights arising under the law. The School also reserves the right to discipline students for violations of this policy, up to and including suspension and expulsion.<\/p><p>Students are encouraged to remove any \u201cpersonal\u201d information stored on the School\u2019s computers. Generally, the School will delete information left on computers\/networks to better facilitate the use of computers for legitimate School purposes, and the School shall not be liable for any damages resulting from the deletion of personal files or personal electronic information stored on School computers.<\/p><p>Protection Measures<\/p><p>While Green Dot is able to exercise reasonable control over content created and purchased by Green Dot, it has limited control over content accessed via the internet and no filtering system is 100% effective. Dangers of Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Drugs<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-12227\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"27\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-12227\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>Our Charter School and Green Dot Public Schools prides itself on providing a safe learning environment for its students.The risk of unprescribed synthetic drugs, such as Fetanyl, is a growing national concern. We ask for your support in continuing to keep our schools safe and drug-free locations.<\/p><p>Fentanyl is an extremely potent opioid that poses significant risks even in small amounts. Its presence in counterfeit pills and other substances has tragically led to numerous overdoses and deaths across the country.<\/p><p>In response to the growing concern around fentanyl use in younger age groups, our Charter School and Green Dot Public Schools has worked with the California Department of Public Health to supply our schools with Naloxone in the event of an on campus opioid overdose. Naloxone, also known as Narcan,\u00a0is a lifesaving medication used to reverse opioid overdose including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. It is safe and easy to use, works almost immediately, and is non-addictive. Staff at each school site have all been trained in the proper administration of the lifesaving drug in the event it must be used.\u00a0<\/p><p>There have not been any reported cases of fentanyl use at any of our schools. This is just a preventative measure for our students and community. Our Charter School and Green Dot Public Schools encourages and fosters a drug free environment for all students, staff, and the community. This preventative measure is to continue to ensure the safety and wellness of those that we serve.<\/p><p><b>Helpful Tips and Resources<\/b><\/p><ol><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Educate Yourself and Your Child<\/b>: Learn about the signs and symptoms of drug use, including changes in behavior or physical appearance. Open dialogue with your child about the dangers of synthetic drugs and the importance of making healthy choices.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Monitor Online Activities<\/b>: Be aware of your child\u2019s online behavior and interactions, as synthetic drugs are sometimes marketed and sold through social media and other internet platforms.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Seek Support and Guidance<\/b>: If you suspect your child may be experimenting with drugs or if you need guidance on how to discuss these issues, don\u2019t hesitate to reach out to school counselors, healthcare professionals, or community organizations specializing in substance abuse prevention.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dispose of Unused Medications Safely<\/b>: Properly dispose of unused or expired medications to prevent accidental ingestion or misuse. Many pharmacies and law enforcement agencies offer safe disposal options.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay Informed<\/b>: Stay updated on local and state efforts to combat drug abuse and support legislation that promotes community safety and well-being.<\/li><\/ol><p>We will continue ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students. If you have any questions or concerns regarding student safety, or substance abuse prevention, please feel free to contact us at our Charter School Main Office.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"28\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-12228\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Suicide Prevention Policy<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-12228\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"28\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-12228\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><h3>Suicide Prevention Policy<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot recognizes that suicide is a major cause of death among youth and should be taken seriously.\u00a0 To attempt to reduce suicidal behavior and its impact on students and families, Green Dot has developed prevention, intervention, and postvention strategies .<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In compliance with Education Code Section 215, this policy has been developed in consultation with Green Dot and community stakeholders, Green Dot school-employed mental health professionals (e.g., school counselors, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists , nurses), administrators, other school staff members, parents\/guardians\/caregivers, students, local health agencies and professionals, law enforcement, and community organizations in planning, implementing, and evaluating Green Dot\u2019 strategies for suicide prevention and intervention. Green Dot must work in conjunction with local government agencies, community-based organizations, and other community supports to identify additional resources.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure the policies regarding suicide prevention are properly adopted, implemented, and updated, Green Dot shall appoint an individual (or team) to serve as the suicide prevention point of contact for Green Dot. This policy shall be reviewed and revised as indicated, at least annually in conjunction with the previously mentioned community stakeholders.<\/span><\/p><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span><b>Staff Development<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot, along with its partners, has carefully reviewed available staff training to ensure it promotes the mental health model of suicide prevention and does not encourage the use of the stress model to explain suicide.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training shall be provided for all school staff members.\u00a0 It may also be provided, when appropriate, for other adults on campus (such as substitutes and intermittent staff, volunteers, interns, tutors, coaches, and afterschool staff).<\/span><\/p><p><b>Training:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All suicide prevention trainings shall be offered under the direction of mental health professionals (e.g., school counselors, school psychologists, and school mental health services team members,such as licensed clinical social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists,) , other public entity professionals, such as psychologists or social workers) who have received advanced training specific to suicide. Staff training may be adjusted year-to-year based on previous professional development activities and emerging best practices.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least annually, all staff shall receive training on the risk factors and warning signs of suicide, suicide prevention, intervention, referral, and postvention.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a minimum, all staff shall participate in training on the core components of suicide prevention (identification of suicide risk factors and warning signs, prevention, intervention, referral, and postvention) at the beginning of their employment or annually. Core components of the general suicide prevention training shall include:<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to talk with a student about thoughts of suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to respond appropriately to the youth who has suicidal thoughts. Such responses shall include constant supervision of any student judged to be at risk for suicide and an immediate referral for a suicide risk assessment;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasis on immediately referring (same day) any student who is identified to be at risk of suicide for assessment while staying under constant monitoring by staff member;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasis on reducing stigma associated with mental illness and that early prevention and intervention can drastically reduce the risk of suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reviewing the data annually to look for any patterns or trends of the prevalence or occurrence of suicide ideation, attempts, or death. Data from the Social Emotional Learning Screener should also be analyzed to identify school climate deficits and drive program development.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information regarding groups of students judged by the school, and available research, to be at elevated risk for suicide. These groups include, but are not limited to, the following:<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth affected by suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth with a history of suicide ideation or attempts;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth with disabilities, mental illness, or substance abuse disorders;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning youth;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth experiencing homelessness or in out-of-home settings, such as foster care; and<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth who have suffered traumatic experiences.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to initial orientations to the core components of suicide prevention, ongoing annual staff professional development for all staff may include the following components:<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of traumatic stress on emotional and mental health;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common misconceptions about suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School and community suicide prevention resources;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appropriate messaging about suicide (correct terminology, safe messaging guidelines);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The factors associated with suicide (risk factors, warning signs, protective factors);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to identify youth who may be at risk of suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appropriate ways to interact with a youth who is demonstrating emotional distress or is suicidal. Specifically, how to talk with a student about their thoughts of suicide and (based on Green Dot guidelines) how to respond to such thinking; how to talk with a student about thoughts of suicide and appropriately respond and provide support based on Green Dot guidelines;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot-approved procedures for responding to suicide risk (including multi-tiered systems of support and referrals). Such procedures should emphasize that the suicidal student should be constantly supervised until a suicide risk assessment is completed;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot-approved procedures for responding to the aftermath of suicidal behavior (suicidal behavior postvention);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding after a suicide occurs (suicide postvention);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resources regarding youth suicide prevention;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasis on stigma reduction and the fact that early prevention and intervention can drastically reduce the risk of suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasis that any student who is identified to be at risk of suicide is to be immediately referred (same day) for assessment while being constantly monitored by a staff member.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Employee Qualifications and Scope of Services<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees of Green Dot must act only within the authorization and scope of their credential or license. While it is expected that school professionals are able to identify suicide risk factors and warning signs, and to prevent the immediate risk of a suicidal behavior, treatment of suicidal ideation is typically beyond the scope of services offered in the school setting. In addition, treatment of the mental health challenges often associated with suicidal thinking typically requires mental health resources beyond what schools are able to provide.<\/span><\/p><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span><b>Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers Participation and Education<\/b><\/li><\/ol><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents\/guardians\/caregivers may be included in suicide prevention efforts. At a minimum, schools shall share this suicide prevention policy with parents\/guardians\/caregivers by notifying them where a complete copy of the policy is available.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents\/guardians\/caregivers should be invited to provide input on the development and implementation of this policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All parents\/guardians\/caregivers may have access to suicide prevention training that addresses the following:<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to talk with a student about thoughts of suicide;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to respond appropriately to the student who has suicidal thoughts. Such responses shall include constant supervision of any student judged to be at risk for suicide and referral for an immediate suicide risk assessment.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span><b>Student Participation and Education<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Messaging about suicide has an effect on suicidal thinking and behaviors. Consequently, Green Dot along with its partners has carefully reviewed and will continue to review all materials and resources used in awareness efforts to ensure they align with best practices for safe messaging about suicide.\u00a0 Suicide prevention strategies may include, but not be limited to, efforts to promote a positive school climate that enhances students\u2019 feelings of connectedness with Green Dot and is characterized by caring staff and harmonious interrelationships among students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot\u2019 instructional and student support program shall promote the healthy mental, emotional, and social development of students including, but not limited to, the development of problem-solving skills, coping skills, and resilience.\u00a0 The instruction shall not use the stress model to explain suicide.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot\u2019 instructional curriculum may include information about suicide prevention, as appropriate or needed, taking into consideration the grade level and age of the students.\u00a0 Under the supervision of an appropriately trained individual acting within the scope of her\/his credential or license, students shall:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive developmentally appropriate, student-centered education about the warning signs of mental health challenges and emotional distress;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive developmentally appropriate guidance regarding Green Dot\u2019 suicide prevention, intervention, and referral procedures.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The content of the education may include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coping strategies for dealing with stress and trauma;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to recognize behaviors (warning signs) and life issues (risk factors) associated with suicide and mental health issues in oneself and others;\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help-seeking strategies for oneself and others, including how to engage school-based and community resources and refer peers for help;\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasis on reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and the fact that early prevention and intervention can drastically reduce the risk of suicide.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student-focused suicide prevention education can be incorporated into classroom curricula (e.g., Advisory, College Readiness, Seminar, physical education).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot will support the creation and implementation of programs and\/or activities on campus that raise awareness about mental wellness and suicide prevention (e.g., Mental Health Awareness Week, Peer Counseling, Freshman Success, and National Alliance on Mental Illness on Campus High School Clubs).<\/span><\/p><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Intervention and Emergency Procedures<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot designates the following positions to act as the primary and secondary suicide prevention liaisons:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School Psychologist<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School Mental Health Services Therapist or School Mental Health Team Member\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School Counselor<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever a staff member suspects or has knowledge of a student\u2019s suicidal intentions, they shall promptly notify the primary designated suicide prevention liaison. If this primary suicide prevention liaison is unavailable, the staff shall promptly notify the secondary suicide prevention liaison.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suicide prevention liaison shall immediately notify the Head of School or designee. The suicide prevention liaison and\/or Head of School or designee shall then notify the student\u2019s parent\/guardian as soon as possible if appropriate and in the best interest of the student. Determination of notification to parents\/guardians\/caregivers should follow a formal initial assessment to ensure that the student is not endangered by parental notification.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suicide prevention liaison shall also refer the student to mental health resources at Green Dot or in the community.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a student is in imminent danger (has access to a gun, is on a rooftop, or in other unsafe conditions), a call shall be made to 911.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a suicide attempt or threat is reported on campus or at a school-related activity, the suicide prevention liaison shall, at a minimum:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure the student\u2019s physical safety by one of the following, as appropriate:<\/span><\/li><\/ol><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securing immediate medical treatment if a suicide attempt has occurred;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securing law enforcement and\/or another emergency assistance if a suicidal act is being actively threatened;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping the student under continuous adult supervision until the parent\/guardian and\/or appropriate support agent or agency can be contacted and has the opportunity to intervene.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remaining calm, keeping in mind the student is overwhelmed, confused, and emotionally distressed;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving all other students out of the immediate area;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sending the student away or leaving him\/her alone, even to go to the restroom;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing comfort to the student, listening and allowing the student to talk and being comfortable with moments of silence;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promising privacy and help, but not promising confidentiality.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Document the incident in writing as soon as feasible.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow up with the parent\/guardian and student in a timely manner to provide referrals to appropriate services as needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a referral is made, Green Dot shall verify with the parent\/guardian that the follow up treatment has been accessed.\u00a0 Parents\/guardians will be required to provide documentation of care for the student.\u00a0 If parents\/guardians refuse or neglect to access treatment for a student who has been identified to be at risk for suicide or in emotional distress, the suicide prevention liaisons shall meet with the parent to identify barriers to treatment (e.g., cultural stigma, financial issues) and work to rectify the situation and build understanding of care.\u00a0 If follow up care is still not provided, Green Dot may contact the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS.)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide access to counselors or other appropriate personnel to listen to and support students and staff who are directly or indirectly involved with the incident at Green Dot.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide an opportunity for all who respond to the incident to debrief, evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies used, and make recommendations for future actions.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event a suicide occurs or is attempted on the Green Dot campus, the suicide prevention liaison shall follow the crisis intervention procedures contained in Green Dot\u2019s safety plan. After consultation with the Principal or designee and the student\u2019s parent\/guardian about facts that may be divulged in accordance with the laws governing confidentiality of student record information, the Principal or designee may provide students, parents\/guardians, and staff with information, counseling, and\/or referrals to community agencies as needed.\u00a0 Green Dot staff may receive assistance from Green Dot counselors or other mental health professionals in determining how best to discuss the suicide or attempted suicide with students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event a suicide occurs or is attempted off the Green Dot campus and unrelated to school activities, the Principal or designee shall take the following steps to support the student:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact the parent\/guardian and offer support to the family.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss with the family how they would like Green Dot to respond to the attempt while minimizing widespread rumors among teachers, staff, and students. <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtain permission from the parent\/guardian to share information to ensure the facts regarding the crisis are correct.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suicide prevention liaisons shall identify a media spokesperson if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide care and determine appropriate support to affected students.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow Green Dot\u2019s re-entry protocol, including, but not limited to, provide an opportunity to the student and parent\/guardian to participate in a re-entry planning meeting with the Principal or designee, and Green Dot\u2019s mental-health staff.\u00a0 Assessing capacity to integrate back into school may include obtaining a written release from the parent\/guardian to speak with any health care providers; conferring with the student and parent\/guardian about any specific requests on how to handle the situation; informing the student\u2019s teachers about possible days of absences; allowing accommodations for make-up work (being understanding that missed assignments may add stress to the student); appropriate administrators maintaining ongoing contact with the student to monitor the student\u2019s actions and mood; and working with the parent\/guardian to involve the student in an aftercare plan.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Supporting Students during or after a Mental Health Crisis\u00a0<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students shall be encouraged through the education program and in Green Dot activities to notify a teacher, Administrator, School Psychologist, School Counselor, School Mental Health Services team member or other adult when they are experiencing thoughts of suicide or when they suspect or have knowledge of another student\u2019s suicidal intentions. \u00a0 Green Dot staff should treat each report seriously, calmly, and with active listening and support.\u00a0 Staff should be non-judgmental to students and discuss with the student, and parent\/guardian, about additional resources to support the student.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you would like to commence mental health services for a student at the school, please contact the School Counselor, School Mental Health Services Team MemberSchool Psychologist, or the main office by calling the school&#8217;s office.<\/span><\/p><ol><li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span><b>Responding After a Suicide Death (Postvention)<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A death by suicide in the school community (whether by a student or staff member) can have devastating consequences on the school community, including students and staff.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Dot shall follow the below action plan for responding to a suicide death, which incorporates both immediate and long-term steps and objectives:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suicide prevention liaison shall:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coordinate with the Principal or designee to:<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confirm death and cause;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify a staff member to contact deceased\u2019s family (within 24 hours);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enact the Suicide Postvention Response;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notify all staff members (ideally in-person or via phone, not via e-mail or mass notification).<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coordinate an all-staff meeting, to include:<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notification (if not already conducted) to staff about suicide death;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional support and resources available to staff;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notification to students about suicide death and the availability of support services (if this is the protocol that is decided by administration);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share information that is relevant and that which you have permission to disclose.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare staff to respond to needs of students regarding the following:<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review of protocols for referring students for support\/assessment;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking points for staff to notify students;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resources available to students (on and off campus).<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify students significantly affected by suicide death and other students at risk of imitative behavior;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify students affected by suicide death but not at risk of imitative behavior;\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate with the larger school community about the suicide death;\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide information regarding funeral arrangements for family and school community (if appropriate);\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respond to memorial or vigil requests in respectful and non-harmful manner; responses should be handed in a thoughtful way and their impact on other students should be considered; The following guidelines are recommended \u2013 final decisions are to be made collaboratively by the school administrator and Green Dot\u2019s School Coordination of Services Team Mental Health Team:\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memorials created by students (including flowers, cards, pictures, stuffed animals, or other items):\u00a0 Such memorials should not be disruptive to the daily school routine. Memorials placed in the hallway or heavily trafficked areas could be disruptive and may be relocated.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An established timeframe for the display of memorials should be shared with students and staff, after which any non-perishable and salvageable items should be reviewed for appropriateness and may be offered to the family by the identified school liaison. An example of a timeframe could be to keep the memorial in place until the day of the services or during a natural break in the school\u2019s calendar, whichever comes first.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Permanent memorials, such as trees, benches, or wall plaques are not permitted on school property.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0 focus of the school should be to maintain a regular schedule, structure and routine as much as possible given the circumstances, which will benefit the entire student body and staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memorial service or vigil should not be held at the school site, as this would disrupt the regular schedule of a school day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any fundraising efforts should be led by the student\u2019s family or appointed designee not by a Green Dot employee.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify media spokesperson if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include long-term suicide postvention responses:<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support siblings, close friends, teachers, and\/or students of
