Local Green Dot Public School Celebrated and Supported on The Ellen Show

Principal Jasmia Fowler and students of Ánimo College Preparatory Academy received recognition from Ellen and $50,000 from Amazon for school’s athletic program

LOS ANGELES, CA - Ánimo College Preparatory Academy, a Title I Green Dot Public School located in Watts, was celebrated on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Principal Jasmia Fowler, who was interviewed by Ellen, discussed the school and its athletic program as a “safe haven” for children growing up in the surrounding neighborhood. She was surprised by several of her students who appeared on the show, before they were awarded brand new sports equipment, along with $50,000 from Amazon to support the school’s athletic program.

“We were so thrilled and honored to be on The Ellen Show and get a chance to share our story with so many,” said Fowler. “At Green Dot, our number one priority is shaping the best possible outcomes for our students. We strive to provide a positive, healthy learning environment filled with opportunities for our students to grow into well-rounded leaders of tomorrow. Our athletic program is a critical part of that - creating a safe space for our students to develop leadership skills, connect with fellow students, pursue personal goals - and most of all, just have fun. We couldn’t be more grateful for the support of Ellen and Amazon.”

Fowler began her career as a high school special education teacher after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology from Howard University. She soon realized that she wanted to make an impact as a school leader and received her M.Ed in School Leadership from Harvard University. Now, at Ánimo College Preparatory Academy, she serves as principal and a mentor to many students and teachers.

“Jasmia Fowler - and the amazing Ánimo College Prep Academy students - are examples of the wonderful staff and students we have the privilege to serve at Green Dot Public Schools, “ said Cristina de Jesus, President and CEO of Green Dot Public Schools California. “At Green Dot, it is our goal to bring high quality, free public education to all families and ensure every child is given opportunities to succeed in college, leadership and life. Our students, and our communities, deserve nothing less. Programs like Ánimo College Preparatory Academy’s athletics are a critical part of that mission, giving students the chance to learn, grow, and thrive in safe and supportive environments. The support of Ellen and Amazon helps us grow that program and extend those opportunities to even more students, and we are thankful for it.”
